We value research that makes a difference in the world. We work to get our scientific outputs into the hands of other scientists, decision makers, and the public, and foster a broader conversation on important ecological topics. We do this in a number of ways, including via science policy efforts, contributing to professional networks and associations, cultivating media relationships, and engaging with our local schools and community organizations.

Science policy

Scientific research and insights it generates can inform policy decisions, forecasts, and tradeoffs. We take an active approach to policy engagement by contributing to a number of efforts to generate and synthesize scientific insights for policymakers at the State, Federal, and international levels. We contribute to the United Nations Environmental Environmental Programme (UNEP) Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP), the US National Climate Assessment (NCA) Indicators Program, and the NY State Climate Impacts Assessment. The EEAP informs the Parties to the 1987 Montreal Protocols about ongoing changes in UV radiation and its interactions with climate change. The US National Climate Assessment Indicators program has established a suite of indicators to understand the effects of climate change in the US. The NY State Climate Impacts Assessment is a decadal scale effort to understand and forecast climate change impacts on New York State. Dr. Rose serves on the Ecosystems technical workgroup in the Climate Impacts Assessment.

Professional service

Our lab group is active in multiple professional organizations and societies, including GLEON, the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network, and ASLO, the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography. GLEON is a grass-roots network of >500 ecologists, information technology experts, and engaged stakeholders from around the world who are dedicated to network lake science. Dr. Rose served on the GLEON Steering Committee 2013-2016. Graduate student Jenna Robinson currently serves as the Co-Chair of the GLEON Student Association. Graduate student Max Glines serves as a Working Group moderator. All members of the Global Water Lab regularly attend GLEON all-hands meetings and contribute data to many working group projects.

Additional details on ASLO service to follow.

Media engagement

We engage in media outreach associated with many of our scientific projects and the products that follow. This includes writing news releases, publicizing research by our group and others on social media platforms, and working with journalists to strengthen the scientific content of popular press articles. Details to follow.

Schools and communities

We cultivate relationships with organizations in our local communities, including schools and local not-for-profits. As an example of our efforts, we installed a weather station at a local elementary school to improve curriculum on a new NY State module on weather and climate. We've also developed a series of outreach signs in Lake Placid, NY, showcasing Adrondack lake ecology and how human activities have altered these ecosystems. Finally, we also partner with Lacawac Sanctuary, where we conduct ongoing research, to improve the public understanding of ecological research.

Additional details on engagement with Mirror Lake signs, South African workshops, Rensselaer's Black Family Technology Awareness Day, and development of an augmented reality sandbox to follow.
